~ Veritas Christian Co-op ~ Lebanon, Ohio ~Spanish 1:A (Grades 7-10) ~ Beginning Spanish class will concentrate on teaching conversational Spanish using the Visual Link computer-based program that is considered by some to be equivalent to 2 years of high school language. The students will begin learning grammar and conversation from the first day of class. As the year progresses, students will be required to speak more Spanish during class. Basic verb tenses will be a large focus of study including: present, present progressive, future, reflexive and the conditional tenses. Noun/verb agreement, gender/number agreement, use of prepositions, and other basics of Spanish grammar will be taught each week. Students will spend 20 - 30 minutes per school day using the computer program which will train the student’s ear to hear the accent of a native speaker, teach the vocabulary, and the basic verbal flow of words. The vocabulary and grammar learned from the program will be quizzed each week. Each student will be required to turn in a writing assignment which allows problem areas to surface and be dealt with quickly. Games will be played each week in class and activities performed such as singing, reading, and cooking will be used to reinforce proper use of the vocabulary and grammar learned that week. Special recommendations: “The course has been taught at the university level for 7 years as a stand-alone curriculum. That means it has gone through rigorous screening by PhDs in the field.” And “Visual Link Spanish(tm) has been recognized by NARS (North Atlantic Regional Schools) for two years of High-School Credit.” Scheduling Info/Prerequisites: 3 trimesters (year long) Intended Curriculum: Visual Link Outside Work: Significant; Requires at least 20-30 minutes/day of language practice Supply/Book Fees: Teacher, $50/trimester; Computer program, $90 new (can be shared among siblings) Supply List: 3-ring binder with 4 tabs labeled with the following: Verbs, Grammar, Bible, Vocabulary Spanish dictionary – or available on-line resource Pencil and paper for every class |
