Writing Techniques (Grades 7,8) ~ Students will learn the 5-step writing process and apply this method when developing different styles of writing including descriptions, narrations, explanations, and persuasions.  They will also write a dialogue, news story, fictional short story, poetry, various short essays and a critical book review.  Students will develop the skills of outlining, paraphrasing, and collecting information in order to complete a 6-page research paper during the third trimester.

The average student who gives an effort of 100%  will spend between 4 and 5 hours of work outside of class each week.  This is quite an intense class, and parents will want to consider this if assigning other writing at home.  Students will be given constructive feedback on their assignments by the teacher, and students will be awarded points by following the directions of each assignment and by applying the concepts learned in class to their work.   Students will benefit most from the class when parents go over the assignments with them, discussing the feedback that the teacher has given.

This class, or its equivalent, will be required for some upper level Veritas classes due to the research and essay skills needed.
